This monthly summary dataset identifies areas burned by wildfires using global thermal anomaly observations.
The Wildfire Observations - Monthly Summary dataset identifies areas burned by wildfires globally at ~1 km resolution. It is derived from the Suomi NPP VIIRS Thermal Anomalies/Fire product, which detects active fires and other thermal events.
To build the dataset, only high-confidence fire detections are used. For each month, the maximum fire radiative power (FRP) observed in every pixel is recorded. Any pixel where FRP was greater than zero at any point during the month is marked as fire-affected. This produces a binary monthly fire presence map, capturing the locations where wildfire activity occurred.
