This is a static historical baseline dataset for global land areas capturing the risk of water stress/water depletion/groundwater decline between 1979–2019 (water stress/water depletion) and 1990–2014 (groundwater decline) using a well established hydrology and water resources model.

Technical Description

The Water Stress Historical Baseline Risk product captures the baseline historical risk of Water Stress, Water Depletion, and Groundwater Decline across the globe using a well established hydrology and water resources model.

This dataset contains the following fields:

  • water_stress_risk_score: The water stress risk score measures the historical ratio of total water demand to available renewable surface and groundwater supplies for each pixel location between 1979–2019. Water demand includes domestic, industrial, irrigation, and livestock consumptive and non-consumptive uses. Available renewable water supplies include the impact of upstream consumptive water users and large dams on downstream water availability. Higher values indicate more competition among users. Values range from 0-5 representing low (0-1), low-medium (1-2), medium high (2-3), high (3-4), and extremely high (4-5) water stress risk.
  • water_depletion_risk_score: The water depletion risk score measures the historical ratio of total water consumption to available blue water for each pixel location between 1979–2019. Total water consumption includes domestic, industrial, irrigation, and livestock consumptive uses. Available renewable water supplies include the impact of upstream consumptive water users and large dams on downstream water availability. Higher values indicate larger impact on the local water supply and decreased water availability for downstream users. Values range from 0-5 representing low (0-1), low-medium (1-2), medium high (2-3), high (3-4), and extremely high (4-5) water depletion risk.
  • groundwater_table_decline_risk_score: The groundwater table decline risk score measures the average decline of the groundwater table for each pixel location as the average change between 1990–2014. Higher values indicate higher levels of unsustainable groundwater withdrawals. Values range from 0-5 representing low (0-1), low-medium (1-2), medium high (2-3), high (3-4), and extremely high (4-5) groundwater table decline risk.
