Technical Description

The Volcanic Hazard Historical Risk product captures the historical risk of volcanic activity, proximal to volcanic hazards (e.g., pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava). Volcanic Hazard Level is derived from the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program (GVP) volcano dataset, GVP eruption dataset, and the British Geological Survey LaMEVE (Large Magnitude Explosive Volcanic Eruptions) database. These data provide volcano location, maximum volcanic explosive intensity (VEI), and dates of previous eruption. This dataset does not include data for hazard from volcanic ash.

This dataset contains the following fields:

  • volcanic_hazard_index: The volcanic hazard index classifies locations based on their historical risk from volcanic activity, proximal to volcanic hazards such as pyroclastic flows, lahars and lava. It does not capture the risk from volcanic ash. Date of last eruption and maximum volcanic explosive intensity (VEI) are used to generate the values, which are assigned within a 100 km radius of the volcano. Values range from 0-4 representing lowest to highest volcanic hazard levels.
