Tropical Cyclone, Projections, Single Horizon, Global (v1.0)

Description

This product represents projected tropical cyclone risk globally, based on simulations of historical and projected tropical storm tracks from HighResMIP, a component of the CMIP6 project. This tropical cyclone projection layer captures the future risk to tropical cyclones (with wind speeds greater than 74 mph) for all land locations globally. These risk maps reflect bias-corrected risk from tropical cyclones over the period 2015-2050 under SSP5-8.5. Wind speed information is used for the included storms, allowing for distinction between tropical depressions, tropical storms and tropical cyclones/hurricanes.

Technical Description

The SpatiaFi Projection Hurricane Risk dataset is a raster dataset that captures the projected risk from hurricanes across the globe, under a high emissions scenario — SSP5-8.5. This dataset is based on simulations of historical and projected tropical storm tracks from HighResMIP, a component of the CMIP6 project.

This hurricane projection layer captures the future risk to hurricanes (with wind speeds greater than 74 mph) for all land locations globally. These risk maps reflect bias-corrected risk to hurricanes over the period 2015-2050 under SSP5-8.5.

This dataset contains the following fields:

  • hurricane_index: Hurricane risk index scaled between 0.0 and 100.0 based on the minimum and maximum values in the raw hurricane frequency data. These values are bias-adjusted relative to historical hurricane risk, allowing for direct comparison. This data set includes bias-corrected risk to tropical cyclones over the period 2015-2050 under SSP5-8.5. Wind speed information is used for the included storms, allowing for distinction between tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes. This is a value between 0.0 and 100.0.
  • hurricane_risk_class: The hurricane risk classification for each value. Values are integers from 1 to 5 representing the following classes: Very Low Risk (1), Low Risk (2), Moderate Risk (3), High Risk (4), and Very High Risk (5). Values are categorized using the 44th, 67th, 84th, and 94th percentiles of the
  • hurricane_index field, exclusive of '0' values.
