Technical Description

The Fluvial Flood Risk Forecast product provides a estimated look at the maximum forecasted area at risk of fluvial flooding over the next 30 days. The forecast is based on the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) model, which forecasts streamflow values over the next 30 days. The forecasted streamflows are combined with high resolution inundation maps to produce the maximum forecasted area at risk of fluvial flooding. It does not consider flooding from coastal, pluvial or any other processes.

Data are only generated for basins greater than 5,000 sq. km in size, and where the maximum return period for the flooding event is greater than 10 years. The inundation areas identified in this dataset do not consider the role of flood defenses such as levees, dikes, and other infrastructure.

This dataset contains the following fields:

  • flooded_area: A binary field indicating whether the area is forecasted to be within the maximum flood extent areas over the next 30 days. A value of 1 indicates that the area is forecasted to be flooded, and no value indicates that the area is not forecasted to be flooded.
