Extreme Precipitation, Forecast, Max 4-14 Day, Global (v2.0)

Description

The Extreme Precipitation Risk Forecast product captures the forecasted risk of extreme precipitation across the globe using proprietary forecasts of precipitation totals, as well as historically observed statistics of precipitation at the same location. These products seek to identify areas across the region which are forecasted to have anomalously high precipitation totals, looking at both the likelihood of precipitation occurring as well as the intensity of the event. Extreme precipitation index values are calculated and then classed into one of five risk categories. This Forecast Risk layer looks at the maximum of the daily extreme precipitation conditions for the next 4-14 days.

Technical Description

The Extreme Precipitation Risk Forecast v2 product captures the forecasted risk of extreme precipitation across the globe using proprietary forecasts of precipitation totals, as well as historically observed statistics of precipitation at the same location. This product identifies extreme precipitation events characterized by both extreme absolute magnitude and extreme relative to the typical precipitation patterns of a specific location. Extreme precipitation index values are calculated and then classed into one of five risk categories.

This Forecast Risk layer looks at the maximum of the daily extreme precipitation conditions across the globe for the next 4-14 days.

The following Extreme Precipitation Risk classes are used to classify the extreme precipitation index values:

  • Very Low (0) : Very low risk of extreme precipitation events over the current time period.
  • Low (1) : Low risk of extreme precipitation events over the current time period. This is defined as one day in the time period with at least 65th percentile and 10mm of rain.
  • Moderate (2) : Moderate risk of extreme precipitation events over the current time period. This is defined as one day in the time period with at least 75th percentile and 10mm of rain.
  • High (3) : High risk of extreme precipitation events over the current time period. This is defined as one day in the time period with at least 85th percentile and 10mm of rain.
  • Very High (4) : Very high risk of extreme precipitation events over the current time period. This is defined as one day in the time period with at least 95th percentile and 10mm of rain.

This dataset contains the following fields:

  • extreme_precipitation_risk_class: The extreme precipitation risk classification for each pixel location. The values are integers from 0-4 representing the extreme precipitation classes of Very Low (0), Low (1), Moderate (2), High (3), and Very High (4).
