Extreme Heat - Human Risk, Current, Max 1-3 Day, Global (v1.0)

Description

The Current Extreme Heat Risk product captures the current risk of extreme heat across the globe using well-established thermal stress metrics. These products seek to identify areas across the region where current extreme heat conditions may cause physiological stress to humans. The focus of these products is on biological heat stress, but they can also be used to identify areas where heat stress may impact infrastructure or agricultural processes. This Current Risk layer looks at the maximum of the daily extreme heat conditions across the globe for the next 1-3 days.

Technical Description

The Current Extreme Heat Risk product captures the current risk of extreme heat across the globe using well-established thermal stress metrics. These products seek to identify areas across the region where current extreme heat conditions may cause physiological stress to humans. The focus of these products is on biological heat stress, but they can also be used to identify areas where heat stress may impact infrastructure or agricultural processes.

This Current Risk layer looks at the maximum of the daily extreme heat conditions across the globe for the next 1-3 days.

The following Extreme Heat Risk classes are used to classify the risk of heat stress:

  • No Risk (0) : N/A
  • Caution (1) : Fatigue possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity
  • Extreme Caution (2) : Heat stroke, heat cramps, or heat exhaustion possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity
  • Danger (3) : Heat cramps or heat exhaustion likely, and heat stroke possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity
  • Extreme Danger (4) : Heat stroke highly likely

This dataset contains the following fields:

  • extreme_heat_risk_class: The extreme heat risk classification for each pixel location. The values are integers from 0-4 representing the extreme heat classes of No Risk (0), Caution (1), Extreme Caution (2), Danger (3), and Extreme Danger (4).
