Technical Description

The Extreme Cold Anomaly Projection product provides valuable insights into the frequency of extreme cold projections across the globe at a decadal timescale. This product seeks to identify global areas where cold conditions may present risks to human health, agriculture, water resources, and wildlife.

The product's extreme_cold_anomaly_frequency field detects locations experiencing low wind chill values that were concurrently below the normal conditions for that area. It considers regional acclimatization and ensures an absolute baseline for classifying extreme cold events.

This dataset contains the following fields:

  • extreme_cold_anomaly_frequency: Frequency of extreme cold occurrence at pixel locations over the projected time period where the mean daily windchill is below the "Low Risk" threshold (<32F, <0°C) AND below the 5th baseline percentile windchill for that location. For instance, a value of 0.5 would indicate that half of the days were under anomalous extreme cold conditions for that location. This is a value between 0.0 and 1.0.
  • extreme_cold_anomaly_risk_class: The extreme cold anomaly risk classification for each value. Values are integers from 1 to 5 representing the following classes: Very Low Risk (1), Low Risk (2), Moderate Risk (3), High Risk (4), and Very High Risk (5). Values are categorized using the 44th, 67th, 84th, and 94th percentiles of the Extreme Cold - Anomaly Historical, Baseline, Global (v1.0) extreme_cold_anomaly_frequency field, exclusive of '0' values.
