The Data Center-Related Grid Competition Risk, Historical, Baseline, US (v1.0) dataset provides a spatial view of existing data centers per Open Street Map as of 2025, aggregated to the US county level. Using the number of data centers in each county, the dataset classifies data center-related grid competition and supports assessments of current energy demand, competition, and potential siting implications.
The Data Center-Related Grid Competition Risk, Historical, Baseline, US (v1.0) dataset is built from the IM3 Open Source Data Center Atlas. Each facility is represented by its geographic coordinates and spatially joined to U.S. county boundaries. Each county is assigned a count of the total number of facilities within the county. The 44th, 67th, 84th, and 96th percentiles of the geometric mean of data center counts and percent change (0% in the historical data) are used to classify counties into risk classes, indicating the level of potential grid competition due to data center development in the county. The dataset is suitable for mapping existing data center distribution and analyzing exposure to grid resources at the county scale.
